Three Gorges Dam was well known even in the 1951 when Chinese government was first planning to build a giant dam to tackle the floods in Yangtze River, Yangtze River have been accompanying Chinese civilization for thousands of years, as the longest river in China and the third longest river in the world, this river gives Chinese the basic need for life but it also brings many severe damage to the ordinary Chinese people, the recent severe floods occurred in 1998, thousands of people lost their lives even with the support of the whole society, the deadliest floods in Yangtze river once costs 150,000 lives and affected 18 millions citizens in 1931 when new China was not yet established, Yangtze river was always the sore point in Chinese history before the Three Gorges Dam was built, the function to generate electricity is not the main purpose why China to build it, protecting ordinary Chinese people's life from floods is the most important thing, Three Gorges Dam have pros and cons, it can prevent heavy floods and generate huge amount of power, it also can regulate the water lever in middle and lower reaches of the river, to make the river not too dry and not too full, from this point, we can say that this dam contribute a lot to the whole society, as I have mentioned above, every thing have pros and cons, the problem is that this dam really really change the shape of China's landscape, many people once rely on the river for fishing was relocated to other part of the country, even relocated to Beijing and Chongqing, thousands of miles from their homes, these people's life have changed thanks for the giant dam, the other issue is environmental related, it is not environmentally friendly dam frankly say, many animal species once relying on the river and the areas occupied by the dam was damaged, weather conditions changed a lot in the place where the dam was built, Chinese government invest lots of money and resources to tackle the negative problems, include helping Sanxia(the place where the giant dam located) people to adapt to the new environment, such as money compensation, building better houses for them and assist them to find new jobs, the other strategies include planting trees in the affected areas, reintroduce wild animal to the surroundings, the modern Chinese history was shaped by the Three Gorges Dam, whether the project success or not, Chinese have responsibilities for it, it saves people life but it have problems, we will face the challenges and tackle it again, that's the long live Chinese history.
