Top comments Hanno the Phoenician Hanno the Phoenician5 months ago The Three Gorges dam is the largest in potential power generation, which is oddly how the size of a hydroelectric dam is measured. The Itaipu dam is physically much larger, though. Also, as Itaipu has a more reliable water supply, it usually generates more power too. I have toured both dams. Reply 3 George Tempest George Tempest4 months ago (edited) The government simply kicked people out of their homes in how many towns to make this happen and why hasn't anybody come up with a design of pod shaped generator that can be lowered into rivers without the need of building dams? Stop multiplying like rabbits China! Then you wouldn't need so many power facilities... Reply 2 View all 5 replies A.J. Deutsch A.J. Deutsch1 week ago George Tempest, u couldn't just stick a generator in there, in wouldn't spin, water will hit it on all sides and push both sides instead of one Reply Kevin Mathewson Kevin Mathewson6 days ago turbine? The size of a dam, oddly, is defined as it's potential power generation if the river is flowing at full level. In reality, the Three Gorges dam is much smaller than Itaipu, and holds this record only because it has newer technology and more generators. It's 1.3 miles long and 600 feet high. The Itaipu dam, on the Brazil-Paraguay border, is 5 miles long and 650 feet high, much larger in size if not power generation. We travel a lot (Profile photo is in Argentine Patagonia) and have toured both of these dams. Read more Reply Hanno the Phoenician Hanno the Phoenician1 year ago +Roy Jr. You're the idiot. Thee world told them not to do it, then they failed, but never gave up! When it was completed, it was the wonder of the world, paying for itself in no time! They built the train to Tibet that we said they couldn't do! It turned out to be expensive but worth it! Tibet is connected and it can never be separated from China any more by even Tibetans! Reply Eyaura Eya Eyaura Eya3 weeks ago Hey what happens to fish who swim into these? Reply 1 View all 4 replies Kevin Mathewson Kevin Mathewson6 days ago Some dams, usually in salmon-spawning rivers, have fish ladders allowing fish to bypass the dam both upstream and downstream. Basically, fish ladders are gently sloped chutes, or spillways, designed with periodic calm patches breaking up the flow. Salmon reaching the base of the dam are attracted to the current exiting the ladder, and can ascend the spillway in "steps," resting in the calm areas. It's pretty cool, and helps preserve local fisheries. Google image search comes up with some good examples. Read more Reply Kevin Mathewson Kevin Mathewson6 days ago They don't always work, especially for larger dams (where it might be harder for fish to find the ladder) and for larger species of fish, like sturgeon.
